Peter’s Nest
In a clearing below Peter’s Nest Wood, and next to a field known mysteriously as ‘Hell’s Throat’, is the original tiny cottage of Woodwells farmstead, marked on an 1847 map. Peter’s Nest is beyond it, tucked in the woods, and far enough away to be totally private.
Outside, the grounds provide a meeting place for sociable pheasants, and deer can be seen grazing on the lawns in the half-light of dawn. The cottage is approached up a long and sometimes bumpy private drive, as you are now in the deep countryside! It leads behind the church and manor house, into the heart of the beech woods. Surrounded by the steep hangers, off a drive, off a lane, off a minor road, buried in the bosom of the Cotswolds, here is a cosy hideaway that must be about as remote as you can get from the 21st century in southern England.
Peter’s Nest is a favourite cottage for honeymooners and couples – especially walkers and those with dogs! This Cotswold stone cottage tucked away by woods is the perfect ‘love nest’ for two, Virgilian in bucolic peace and sweet sylvan scenery.
Downstairs we enter through the kitchen, which leads into the living room with comfortable dining and sitting areas, and a cosy wood-burning stove. The bathroom is adjacent. As this is a small cottage, the ceiling height is low in the bathroom! A narrow staircase led upstairs to the cosy attic bedroom with king-size bed (with very low, sloping ceilings under the eaves), enjoying views to the west down the Owlpen valley.
There is ample parking and a small garden adjoining the garden of Woodwells cottage. The garden is not enclosed. There is also a large wilderness woodland dell to the east of the cottage. A small wrought iron table provides the opportunity to enjoy a sunset apéritif or breakfast coffee.
